Quick Advice on How to Proofread the Final Draft of Your Essay

Any essay that you may be assigned will need to go through several stages of writing in order to be in an acceptable state to either publish or submit to your professor for a grade. I have listed below the various stages of writing as a refresher in case it has been a while since you have drafted your last essay.

  • Brainstorming (In this step you will do things such as free writing, or making lists of what you are interested in writing about.)
  • Outlining
  • Rough draft
  • Revision
  • Second draft
  • Editing/proofreading

After you have gone through these multiple stages, you will have your final draft which will seem perfect. However, it is necessary to proofread this draft to ensure that even the smallest of errors are realized and corrected. This step is called polishing and there are a few tips to remember when you are perfecting your essay. Wait one or two days to reread this draft for errors. This will ensure that you are seeing the paper for what it is instead of how you mean it to be. By waiting you will more easily recognize any errors that you have made.

  • Another good idea is to have another person read your essay while critically scanning for the smallest mistake and providing constructive criticism.
  • Make any changes that you or your peers have noted and have them read it again. Repeat this process with different people until you are sure that the draft is perfect and ready for your professor or publisher.

Because proofreading can be a difficult process and comments from peers can be confusing and difficult to remember make sure to double space your essays so that there is plenty of room to record comments about the paper. Also provide anyone reviewing your essay with a list of common proofreading marks. These include

  • ≡ - Change to a capital letter
  • / - Change to a lowercase letter
  • ~ Change word order
  • ^ insert any symbol or word (the symbol, be it a letter or punctuation mark will be found written underneath the arrow.
  • And many others…

You will often be able to locate premade lists of these marks on the internet so that you and your peers will have a uniform and easily understood system by which to communicate corrections that should be made. These proofreading tips if used properly will create an impeccable paper that you should be proud of.
