Why Parents Are Against Homework: Suggestions From Experts

Kids aren’t the only ones who dislike homework. Nowadays, many parents support this stance. Surprisingly, their reasons are very similar to those of their children. The most prominent of them are:

  • Children are too stressed.
  • The dangers of stress are well-known today, and they cannot be overlooked. The vast majority of kids today have health issues of some kind, and stress from school exacerbates their conditions. This is hardly conductive to actually learning something valuable. Many parents see the health risks for their children and believe that any educational value these assignments might have isn’t worth it.

  • Homework doesn’t really help learning.
  • Assignments are educational not just because children are forced to do some extra research, but because the teachers can point out their mistakes and steer them in the right direction. Unfortunately, teachers today are so busy that they hardly have time to mark papers. Very few of them actually go over the problems with every child, so the value of homework is greatly reduced.

  • There are more important things in life.
  • Considering how fast-paced and versatile life is today, it’s really no wonder that homework doesn’t rate high on anyone’s priority scale. There are plenty of opportunities for children to learn and do something much more important than going over the material covered in class and completing assignments that will have absolutely no impact on their futures.

  • Homework is boring.
  • In today’s world, anything that makes you sit and do nothing but turn pages and take notes for an extended period of time seems completely useless. Children are used to computers and technology, so it’s no wonder that they are bored stiff with the assignments that were designed long before these technological wonders were available. The system of education is changing, but it does so slowly. However, children are bored now and these negative emotions make them resent the process of formal education as a whole.

  • Every child is unique.
  • This is the major consideration that is completely overlooked by the standardized system of education. This might have been acceptable a few decades ago, but not today. Children now have the means to learn on their own. The Internet is an incredibly rich source of information. It also grants your kids a chance to communicate with children from other countries and learn about the schools and homework there. All these tools allow every child to develop at his or her own pace. Under these circumstances, standardized assignments become a hindrance instead of help.

Avoid Boredom

Nobody ever does their homework well if they are bored. Find ways to avoid boredom even if it means doing shorter sessions more often of your homework. Once you are bored, your homework standards slip.

Improve Memory

You can improve your memory. There are exercises and activities you can do just as you might exercise some other muscles in your body. Learn to improve your memory.

Use Key Words

Keywords are just that, the key words. Develop the skill of being able to read something and highlight the keywords. These are the words which will trigger ideas in your mind later on.

Know how long you are able to concentrate. Some people can concentrate for much longer periods than others. But if you know how long it is you can concentrate effectively, then set your homework tasks accordingly.
