Why Homework Creates Stress And How To Deal With It

As every student knows, homework can be unbelievably stressful. It’s easy to find yourself inundated with papers, projects, and assignments, not to mention studying for exams. It takes up most of your free time outside of school or college classes, and if your courses are particularly challenging, it can be a real nightmare. Stress is terrible for your health. It’s medically known to cause heart problems, high blood pressure, poor sleep, and poor eating habits, not to mention additional psychological effects like anxiety and depression. Stress should be avoided at all costs. Unfortunately, you can’t say the same about homework.

Homework is stressful because so much is on the line. Students strive to get good grades, especially those who are among the most academically gifted of their peers. In high school, grades determine what college you get into. In college, your GPA determines whether you graduate, and what future career opportunities will be available to you. Especially if you’re prone to anxiety, worrying about homework can tear you apart. When you get stressed out, it actually hurts your grades. You don’t sleep well or eat right. Depression and anxiety affect learning, memory, and cognition, making it harder to do well in school. It’s important to avoid and manage anxiety if you’re going to stay sane and do well academically.

How to Deal with Homework Stress

There are actually ways of managing the stress that you can experience when you’re overwhelmed with school assignments. Here’s how to keep your anxieties and worries in check.

  • Organize your time. Organize your scheduling and time, and avoid having to do things at the last minute. Procrastinating only leads to more anxiety, and whatever level of schooling you’re at, academics need to come first. Try to organize your extracurricular activities, hobbies, and social life around school and studying. Try to make a study schedule so that everything gets done.

  • Use stress relief techniques. Do whatever you can do minimize your stress levels. Some people use meditation and breathing techniques, which calm your mind while physically lowering your heart rate and blood pressure. Other people find that exercise helps. You can even read a good book or engage in a hobby. Anything that makes you feel calm and at ease.

  • Remember that one bad grade isn’t the end of the world. To be honest, grades aren’t everything. Even though they’re very important, they seem far more important than they really are while you’re still in school. Plenty of people with a B average in high school can get into a good college. You don’t need a perfect 4.0 GPA in every career. Some careers, like high finance or becoming a CEO, might matter more. But plenty of people have graduated with a 3.5, or even a 3.0, and gone on to live happy lives with fulfilling, lucrative, successful careers. Don’t worry if you do poorly on an assignment or two. Don’t worry if you get a B in a class. Focus on the big picture.

Avoid Boredom

Nobody ever does their homework well if they are bored. Find ways to avoid boredom even if it means doing shorter sessions more often of your homework. Once you are bored, your homework standards slip.

Improve Memory

You can improve your memory. There are exercises and activities you can do just as you might exercise some other muscles in your body. Learn to improve your memory.

Use Key Words

Keywords are just that, the key words. Develop the skill of being able to read something and highlight the keywords. These are the words which will trigger ideas in your mind later on.


Know how long you are able to concentrate. Some people can concentrate for much longer periods than others. But if you know how long it is you can concentrate effectively, then set your homework tasks accordingly.
